When I initially rung Rod I did not have a bike, nor had I ridden one for almost 10 years. This was just under 60 days before I planned to undertake the Ironman 70.3. Rod took me straight under his wing and cracked into a program for the following week, managed to schedule it around my existing commitments and provided me with a comprehensive training program matched with a detailed description on the focus of the upcoming week's training. I honestly could not have achieved anywhere near my time without him, he checked in on me during the week to make sure I was able to keep up with the workload and most importantly provided a true and honest communication channel where I could let him know where I was struggling.
Thank you Rod, you seriously helped keep me accountable as well as pick my motivation up off the ground when the training was getting hard. Looking back on the whole experience, you were definitely part of the reason the actual event was so enjoyable. I felt prepared and ready to roll with the training under my belt and the psychological benefit of having someone in my corner from start to finish was a true bonus!
- Taupo 70.3 Half Ironman, March 2020
I’m not out here setting records or collecting medals but I have my own reasons and motivations for running. What I didn’t have was the knowledge or confidence to do it right and challenge something big. Rod was able to provide this for me. What I really liked was the bespoke approach, the flexibility to adjust things as and when I needed to and the clearer understanding of the things around the running that have a real impact on how you perform. And the program is fun! I saw really good results almost immediately and am enjoying my training a lot more leading into the big day in October. I’d recommend Rod for anyone who wants to take their running to the next level, attempt an exercise/fitness challenge or someone who just wants to enjoy their running more.
Post Event Update: I am happy to say I finished….smiling, injury free and with gas in the tank! I give a good amount of the credit to Rod. The 6 months of working with him led me to this moment. The training really did its work. It was most noticeable in the last 10 km where I needed the extra boost. The preparation, nutrition and race day strategy really gave me confidence to perform well. I’m looking forward to doing more work with Rod for my next challenge and can absolutely recommend him.
- Auckland Marathon, 2019
I asked Rod to help me with my final 12 weeks preparation leading into Ironman 70.3 Geelong. He was a massive help in designing my training plan and accompanying me on my long rides. His support, advice and motivation were what made me achieve my goals for the race. Thanks Rod - looking forward to working with you for the 2019/2020 season!!
- Geelong 70.3 Half Ironman, 2019
Rod is so passionate about all things fitness/triathlon, so much so it was enough to make me want to give it a go, starting with a sprint tri. I loved running and had always wanted to try road cycling, but was a bit scared of it! So committing to an event gave me the kick to actually get on a road bike and now I love it too. Rod was my mentor through the whole process, full of great advice and very supportive, he even came to the event. It makes a difference to have someone who wants to see you reach your full potential. Rod really does love to help people and wants to share the passion he has for all things running, swimming and cycling!
- Panasonic Tri Series, 2018/2019
Rod coached/mentored me for my first ever Half Ironman event in Taupo 2018. He has really good understanding about the whole life/training balance which in my experience, a lot of coaches don’t have. Because of that, I feel he appeals to the more casual athletes, as well as those looking to train at a high level. Everyone is different and at different levels, but what worked best for me were the one on one catch-ups that we had. I think that those chats, while casual, were where I got the most help and information to go forward with training, as well as a boost in confidence knowing that he thought I was on track and doing the right thing in terms of training, which is what I found hardest with my first 70.3. I was a bit underdone due to a shin injury but was happy to come away with 13th place in my age group. Always things to work on, so with his help I am already looking forward to the winter training and another event in the future!
- Taupo 70.3 Half Ironman, 2018
I was taking on my first half marathon for a number of years and I was looking for a new training program. I was wanting one that ensured I would get in the shape required to complete the course, along with keeping me motivated along the way. Rod provided me with a plan that got me to the place I needed to be and was specific to my needs. I got to the start line feeling ready, and my recovery was noticeably improved. I have continued to use the foundation of Rods training plan post the event, it serves me well due to still being interesting, along with being a good barometer for my current level of fitness.
